Inspiring Story

I have to say that the story of the girl and her friends raising money to attend the GWU gala is pretty inspiring. You can see Ken Krogue's take on it here.

As this blog earlier reported, Beck's pledge will eventually go to the school. It turns out the website tracking peoples' pages read was put together by the school's web person.

Good job kids on your fundraiser. Now run from GWU and TJEd as fast as you can! Don't waste your youth on this garbage!

"Too bad he didn't challenge them to come up with a plan for fixing problems based completely upon their reading."
Ah, you worry too much R.C. You see reading lots is just step one. All these kids will come up with solutions to world problems when they attend GWU. ;)

Seriously R.C., I don't think you would ever be satisfied with anything as long as it is coming from GWU. Of course there ought to be more to the reading than just reading. But this was a relatively short (over the summer) read-at-thon. Not read-and-solve-world-problems-a-thon. Its kind of hard to quantify fixing problems like reading pages. So for the sake of a penny a page, depth probably was sacrificed.

And one last note: It seems that one of the more common books kids were reading for this event was Harry Potter. So I'm kind of glad they weren't made to come up with a plan for fixing things based solely upon those readings. ;)
